Consumer eSIM

The SIM for the next generation of connected consumer devices. Consumer eSIM makes it easier to extend mobile connectivity to devices such as tables, smart watches, pet- and kid trackers, fitness bands, portable health systems and various other devices.

IoT eSIM

The GSMA eSIM specification provides a standard mechanism for the remote provisioning and management of IoT SIM profiles “over the air”. Power your IoT devices and cellular modules with M2M eSIM.

FAQs

An eSIM or in the GSMA referred as eUICC that enables to program different SIM profiles over-the-air and hence, swap the mobile network provider. You can choose one telecom operator today, and may move your entire SIM base to another tomorrow, without the need to change physical SIM cards.

Unfortunately, this is not possible. Even though the form-factors of both SIM types are the same, they have different operating systems running on them. You cannot update a legacy SIM over-the-air with a new SIM profile.

No, you cannot. You need to work with an connectivity aggregator like Freeeway who puts together a pool of different mobile network profiles to choose from.

The consumer eSIM standard is built for consumer devices such as mobile phones, tablets and laptops. In that standard, the eSIM Profile download is initiated by the End-User.
In contrast, the IoT eSIM standard is made for IoT devices. Currently it is most used in the automotive industry. In the IoT eSIM standard, the eSIM profile download is initiated by the IoT device and is done via over-the-air processes.

When you equip an IoT device with a eSIM, it needs to be able to access any mobile network when it starts for the very first time. The mobile network provider that is used in this case, is referred as the boostrap provider in an eSIM context.

Freeeway Consumer eSIM

The eSIM technical architecture is defined by GSMA, refer to GSMA eSIM for more details. GSMA defines tow eSIM standards, Consumer eSIM and IoT eSIM.

Consumer eSIM standard

The consumer eSIM standard is used to remote provision SIM profiles to consumer devices, such as a mobile phones, tablet devices, or laptops.
In this case, theEend-User signs an agreement with her preferred mobile operator and receives a QR code in order to download the SIM profile to the device. To activate the SIM profile download, the End-User scans the QR code with the built in camera, or adds it manually in the SIM management application of the device. After the QR code is stored, the device automatically initiates the SIM profile download.
It is important to mention, that in the Consumer eSIM standard, the SIM profile download is initiated by the End-User.
Today, most consumer devices support this standard. An increasing popular application of Consumer eSIMs are travel SIM cards, that enable you to obtain SIM profiles for the country and the duration you are planning your vacation to avoid excess roaming fees.

Freeeway Consumer eSIM

We provide an eSIM based on the Consumer eSIM standard to enable data connectivity for devices such as kids trackers, kids watches, fitness trackers, bike trackers, etc. We provide different SIM profiles suitable for EU, NAM, LAM, MEA and Asian markets.

Based on your requirements, we create a custom eSIM profile for you and make those available for download. You may consider some lead-time to implement your specifications.

We use TelNA as bootstrap provider for your Consumer eSIM.

Freeeway IoT eSIM

The eSIM technical architecture is defined by GSMA, refer to GSMA eSIM for more details. GSMA defines tow eSIM standards, Consumer eSIM and IoT eSIM.

IoT eSIM Standard

In contrast to a consumer device, IoT devices usually lack the capability to scan a QR code to initiate the SIM profile download process. The IoT eSIM standard defines the technical specifications to download SIM profiles over-the-air, OTA. The SIM profile download is initiated by a platform that is referred as Remote-SIM-Provisioning platform, RSP. RSP platforms are usually operated by SIM card manufacturers and hosted in high secure environments.

The current IoT eSIM standard, SGP.01 is technically complex and incurs high costs compared to a traditional SIM card that is not remote programmable. GSMA has therefore defined an enhanced version of the IoT eSIM standard, referred as SGP.32. This new standard shall align closer with the Consumer eSIM one with the main objective, to make profile downloads for IoT devices more flexible, provide more flexibility to install any SIM profile to the IoT device if needed. SGP.32 was finalized end of 2023 with a first availability during 2024. We expect mass adoption the new IoT eSIM standard during 2025.

For the time being, we suggest that you take a more detailed evaluation whether eSIM is the best choice for your IoT project, technically as well as commercially, for the time being.

Freeeway IoT eSIM

We offer a IoT eSIMs that are compliant with the current IoT eSIM standard, SGP.01. As a bootstrap provider we are using KPN Netherlands.
